Located east of Toronto, in Ontario’s Golden Horseshoe, Durham Region offers many natural parks and trails to explore, thanks to a special blend of urban and rural landscapes.

With a population of 700,000, Durham is home to eight municipalities – Ajax, Brock, Clarington, Oshawa, Pickering, Scugog, Uxbridge, and Whitby – each with something new and interesting to explore.

The three largest municipalities, by population, are Oshawa, Whitby, and Ajax.

Oshawa

Oshawa provides a wealth of year-round adventures, festivities, and leisure pursuits for the whole family. Catch the Oshawa Generals OHL hockey team in action or attend events and premier musical acts at the cutting-edge Tribute Communities Centre.

Whitby

  • Population (2021): 138,501
  • Population growth since 2016: 7.9%

Discover the treasures that Whitby’s waterfront has to offer with a stroll through the Lynde Shores Conservation Area and Whitby’s Waterfront Trail, one of the longest uninterrupted pieces of shoreline trail along Lake Ontario.

Ajax

  • Population (2021): 126,666
  • Population growth since 2016: 5.8%
  • Density: 1,900.6/km2

Ajax is a progressive and diverse waterfront community. With a focus on environmentalism, the Town of Ajax offers plenty of conservation areas, parks, and nature trails.
