Map of York Region

Stretching north from Toronto to Lake Simcoe’s shoreline, York Region is a unique amalgamation of cities and towns, home to just under 1.2 million people.

While in York Region’s southern portion you’ll find bustling cities like Markham and Vaughan, as you head north you’ll encounter more rural areas, including historic downtowns, farmlands, wetlands, and forests.

Consisting of nine municipalities, York Region is a vibrant and diverse place to both visit and call home. The three largest municipalities, by population, are Vaughan, Markham, and Richmond Hill.

Vaughan

  • Population (2022): 745,374
  • Population growth since 2016: -0.07%
  • Density: 2,631/km2

Vaughan, located just north of Toronto, is the fifth largest municipality in the Greater Toronto Area. It is often referred to as the “city above Toronto” and is a popular spot for families visiting Canada’s Wonderland and Vaughan Mills.

Markham

  • Population (2021): 338,503
  • Population growth since 2016: 2.90%
  • Density: 1,604.8/km2

Markham is a large, quaint suburb, home to one of two charming, historic Main Streets in the Markham-Unionville region. Golfers can enjoy a round of golf at one of the many courses, and visitors of all ages can experience the many festivals and events held throughout the year.

Richmond Hill

  • Population (2021): 202,022
  • Population growth since 2016: 3.59%
  • Density: 2,004.4/km2

Richmond Hill provides its residents with various parks, arts and cultural events, shopping, and restaurants. With Vaughan and Markham just a stone’s throw away, Richmond Hill is the perfect place to experience the best of both urban and rural life. From lush green parks to treasured cultural heritage, there is something for everyone to enjoy.
